Interview with Elena Rossman, February 2007 An interview with Mrs Elena Rossman, founder and president of the AADGT, published in a Russian online magazine a month or so after the Christmas 2006 concert in Moscow.. The page has since disappeared from the internet, so I have included the original Russian after the English translation below. The translation was kindly provided by Christina Shatuho. Stars Do Not Fall From the Sky
The performance of the young pianist Aimi Kobayashi in the Home of Music resulted in a huge amount of positive response from professionals. Aimi was brought to Moscow by the AADGT (The American Association for Development of the Gifted and Talented, Inc., www.aadgt.org), which is headed by Elena Rossman. We decided to meet with Elena to find out more about the Association’s activities. Mrs Rossman, who is founder, President and Director of the AADGT, can talk for hours about the talented children she deals with. The Association has been operating for 13 years. Elena Rossman watches hundreds of videos of children’s performances from all over the world to find truly unique young musicians. When the first stage of the selection process has been completed, Elena or one of her representatives locates the children, meets with them, listens to them playing, attends rehearsals, and tries different kinds of musical program with them. The best perform at Carnegie Hall, and after a few years some are already winning top prizes in the most important competitions around the world. “There are only a few truly gifted young musicians,” says Elena, “and it is easy to lose them. Our main role is to help them to develop.” And no doubt Elena will achieve this goal. True judges of classical music will never forget the performance of ten-year-old [in fact just turned 11 (ed)] pianist Aimi Kobayashi at Vladimir Spivakov’s Christmas Concert with the Moscow Virtuosi on 24th December, 2006. With huge emotional discipline and the highest skill, Aimi performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 26. The audience gave her a standing ovation as she thanked the orchestra, conductor and audience with a shy smile. Mr Spivakov invited her back on stage several times until she sat at the piano to play an encore. Mrs Rossman selects talented children not only for their technical skills but also for their ability to attract an audience with their passion. Elena told an amazing story. The day before a concert in Yokohama, a girl phoned and asked in very poor English if she would add her to the concert list as a performer. “By that time we had chosen 24 pianists from 240 [applicants] and the program had already been settled. My colleagues were totally against doing such a thing at the last moment,” Elena says. “But the girl kept saying: ‘I implore you, it’s my dream. I just have to perform before an audience of 3,000 people. I will make them happy with my playing.’ And you understand,” says Elena, “it’s a passion. It just cannot leave one indifferent.” The girl was accepted. She played last, and after her performance people had tears in their eyes. “You just can’t imagine what these children are like,” says Elena. “They have so much energy, they are so spontaneous. When these children get together, something unreal happens. They all run to the piano.” Elena told an interesting story about one of these get-togethers. Aimi Kobayashi began playing “Toreador” on the marimba although she had never seen the instrument before. She just started to improvise. While she was playing another girl came to the other side of the marimba and began to play Liszt’s “La Campanella.” The director of French TV’s “Culture” program, Jacques Collet, has filmed some of these meetings, as well as the lessons the children have and their playing, and has assigned copyright to the AADGT. He has made films about Aimi Kobayashi as well. “I will be making films about Aimi as long as I live. I will be showing how she is growing up,” says Jacques. “Creative children are creative in every way,” says Elena. And it is true. A student of hers, ten-year-old Nick Watters, has studied the brain from a very early age. His dream is to stop adults who are already mature enough and have experience from getting older. Nick plays Scriabin and Chopin wonderfully and says that music helps him to develop and make his dream—to be a neurosurgeon—real. Through the time of the Association’s existence such famous people as Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin and Gary Graffman have become honorary members. They have listened to the children and given them truly wonderful feedback. Maxim Vengerov [the Russian violinist] wrote a supportive letter. “Knowing the very busy day and status of these people we are infinitely grateful to them for giving us such terrific help,” comments Mrs Rossman. Another remarkable and unique case that the AADGT is proud of is the performance of the outstanding pianist Grigory Sokolov, who played specially for the Association. All the money from the performance goes to the Association. Seeing how audiences respond to these young gifts to music, the AADGT does its best to give them the opportunity to play at prominent venues. But, unfortunately, all performances depend on money—very big money. That is why Elena Rossman also searches for sponsors. “And we want people to know that all the money we receive is spent only on the children,” she says. “For example, we opened a special, separate account in Aimi Kobayashi’s name, and all the money in this account is spent only for Aimi.” Aimi lives far away from Tokyo [this is when her family still lived in Yamaguchi Prefecture], and twice a month she flies to Tokyo for lessons with her teacher [Yuko Ninomiya]. Her parents cannot afford all the expense of Aimi’s frequent flying to attend lessons and perform at concerts. Fortunately, in the past year the AADGT has been fortunate enough to find a sponsor to pay for Aimi’s air travel. Right now the Association is looking for a sponsor to enable Aimi and her family to move to Tokyo. “We were very happy when Vladimir Spivakov responded and we were able to bring Aimi to Russia,” says Elena. “We hope that our partnership [with him] will continue in the future. We ourselves help as well as we can. Our representative in Tokyo, Mrs Sasayama, goes with Aimi to concerts. She also puts her up in her own home when necessary. Aimi can stay with me when she is in New York. . . . Though we help all children equally! You cannot imagine how difficult it is to tell them that they can’t perform in a big venue just because it costs too much. [In fact] we never say that to them.” “You know, we are not just managers,” continues Elena. “We think of the people around these children. We want to preserve and develop their skills—after all, stars do not just fall from the sky. That is why it is important to keep them practising.” In conclusion, Mrs Rossman said that the Association is open to all kinds of contact. “We want to find musicians who are a true discovery for the world.” | ||

В Москву Аими привезла Ассоциация AADGT (The American Association for Development of the Gifted and Talented Inc., www.aadgt.org) во главе с г-жой Еленой Россман. Мы решили встретиться с Еленой, чтобы узнать о деятельности Ассоциации больше.
Г-жа Елена Россман, основатель, Президент и Творческий директор американской Ассоциации AADGT о талантливых детях может говорить часами. Да и заниматься ими она готова не меньше. Ассоциация действует уже 13 лет. Сотни видеозаписей с выступлениями детей из разных стран отсматривает Елена Россман, чтобы найти поистине уникальных юных музыкантов. Совершив первый этап отбора, Елена сама или через своих представителей находит контакты детей, встречается с ними, прослушивает, ходит на репетиции, пробует с ними различные музыкальные программы. Лучшие – выступают в Карнеги Холл, а, спустя пару лет, уже занимают первые места на самых престижных музыкальных конкурсах по всему миру. «По настоящему талантливых детей немного. – говорит Елена. - И их легко потерять. И наша огромная задача помочь этим талантам расти и развиваться». И, без сомнений, Елене удается добиваться поставленных целей. Настоящие ценители классической музыки никогда не забудут выступления десятилетней Аими Кобаяши на рождественском концерте (24 декабря 2006 года) Владимира Спивакова и «Виртуозов Москвы». С огромной эмоциональной самоотдачей и высочайшим мастерством исполнила Аими концерт Моцарта для фортепиано с оркестром №26. Зал рукоплескал стоя. Аими смущенно улыбалась, благодаря оркестр, дирижера и зал. Г-н Спиваков приглашал на сцену девочку вновь и вновь, пока Аими не села за рояль, чтобы исполнить еще несколько произведений. Г-жа Россман отбирает детей талантливых не только в игре, но еще и способных своей страстью притягивать внимание аудитории. Елена рассказала замечательную историю. За день до концерта в Йокахаме, ей позвонила девочка, которая на ломаном английском попросила включить ее в список выступающих. «На этот момент из 240 пианистов мы выбрали 24. Она не может никого оставить равнодушным». И девочку взяли. Она выступила самой последней. И играла так, что у людей текли слезы. «Вы даже не представляете, какие это дети - говорит Елена. У них столько энергетики. Они такие непосредственные. Когда дети собираются вместе, начинается что-то невероятное. Они рвутся к роялю». Елена рассказала случай, как, однажды, на одной из таких коллективных встреч, Аими Кобаяши начала играть Тореадора на маримбе, хотя раньше этот инструмент никогда не видела. Она просто начала импровизировать. В то время как другая девочка, подошла с другой стороны инструмента и начала играть «Кампанеллу» Листа. О данной и других встречах, а также занятиях и играх детей, директор французской телевизионной программы «Культура» Жак Коле снял несколько фильмов, права на которые безвозмездно передал AADGT. Снимал он фильмы и отдельно об Аими Кобаяши. «Сколько буду жить, столько буду делать фильмов об Аими Кобаяши. Рассказывать, как она растет» - говорит Жак. «Творческие дети творческие во всем» – утверждает Елена. И правда. Десятилетний мальчик по имени Ник Вотер (ученик Елены Россман) с самых юных лет изучает мозг. Его мечта – сделать так, чтобы взрослые люди, которые набрались уже определенного опыта и стали мудрыми, не старели. Ник восхитительно играет Скрябина и Шопена, и утверждает, что музыка помогает ему развиваться и двигаться к его мечте, стать нейрохирургом. За время существования Ассоциации, ее почетными членами стали такие известные люди, как Марта Аргерих, Евгений Кисин, Гари Граффман. Они прослушали и дали потрясающие отзывы ребятам. Максим Венгеров написал поддерживающее письмо. «Зная занятость и статус этих людей, мы бесконечно им благодарны за оказанную помощь» - комментирует г-жа Россман. Еще один примечательный и уникальный случай, которым Ассоциация гордится – это выступление выдающегося пианиста Григория Соколова, специально для AADGT. Все деньги от выступления пошли в Фонд Ассоциации. Видя, как встречает публика юных дарований, AADGT стремится показывать этих музыкантов на больших сценах. Но, к сожалению, все выступления завязаны на деньгах. На больших деньгах. И поэтому, Елена Россман занимается еще и тем, что ищет спонсоров. «И мы хотим, чтобы люди знали, что все деньги уходят только на детей. – говорит Елена - Например, на имя Аими открыл отдельный счет. И все деньги с него тратятся только на нужды Аими». Аими живет далеко от Токио и дважды в месяц летает в Токио на занятия к преподавателю. Ее родители не могут себе позволить оплачивать частые перелеты Аими на концерты и занятия. Прошлые годы AADGT, к счастью, удавалось находить спонсора на перелеты. Сейчас AADGT ищет спонсора для того, чтобы перевезти Аими с семьей в Токио. «Мы были так рады, когда откликнулся Владимир Спиваков. – говорит Елена. - И мы смогли привезти Аими в Москву. Мы надеемся, что наше сотрудничество продлится и в дальнейшем. Мы и сами помогаем, чем можем. Наш представитель в Токио, г-жа Сасаяма сопровождает девочку в концертах. Также, оставляет ее в своем доме, когда того требуют обстоятельства. У меня она может остановиться, когда прилетает в Нью Йорк. Мы в равной степени помогаем всем детям. Вы даже не представляете, как сложно сказать этим детям, что они не могут часто выступать просто потому, что большая сцена стоит денег. И мы никогда им этого не говорим». «Понимаете, мы не просто менеджеры. – продолжает Елена. - Мы думаем о том, кто окружает этих детей. Мы хотим сохранить и развить их дар. Ведь звезды не падают с неба. Ими нужно заниматься». В заключение, г-жа Россман сказала, что Ассоциация открыта для любых контактов. «Мы ищем такое исполнение и таких музыкантов, которые стали бы открытием для мира».
