Piano Sonata in C major no. 21 op. 53 “Waldstein” Performed at an AADGT function “Passion of Music” 12 June 2008. A characteristic Aimi treatment! In places the first movement doesn't go altogether smoothly, but otherwise a very convincing interpretation. Age 12; total length 23:18 VIEW 1st movement (8:54) Removed by the poster mid-Nov VIEW 2nd movement and part of 3rd (7:33; cuts out in medias res) VIEW Rest of 3rd movement (6:51) Removed by the poster mid-Nov For an interesting analysis of Waldstein by Andras Schiff, done at the keyboard of his own piano in the Wigmore Hall, London, see this link (long mp3, ca 45 min). Especially good on the 3rd movement. Things like this are a wonderful aid to appreciating what you're hearing! Click back button to return here.
There are also tantalising scraps of the Pathétique sonata in the two Japanese TV interviews done when she was 11 — for links see the first part of the catalogue, above. I am told by someone who knows that there is a recording of the complete sonata made in a certain very famous concert hall. Unfortunately this venue will not waive copyright restrictions, so we are unlikely to see Pathétique until a recording is made elsewhere.

An admirer of Aimi's playing, she was set to wondering why, of all her performances on YouTube, this one interpretation just didn't quite cut it.

Aimi, aged 8, amazing jury and audience with her playing at the PTNA competition in 2004, when she won at the under-16 level. She “exhibited outstanding maturity and infinite musical talent … leaving other participants far behind”, says the PTNA Newsletter for that year. In the final round she played the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata no. 10 and the Chopin Etude op. 25 no. 2.
